A bird’s eye view of the history of Guru Nanak

Guru Nanak (1469-1539) was one of the greatest religious innovators of all time and the founder of the Sikh religion. Sikhs celebrate his birthday on April 14th by the Nanakshahi calendar. He spent his childhood and young age in Nankana Sahib and started preaching the religion in Nankana Sahib as well. Today, the city is home to one of the most sacred pilgrimage sites for Sikhs all over the world. Gurdwara Janam Asthan is considered as a representation of the home of Guru Nanak’s parents, Mata Tripta and Baba Kalo. He drew his religious ideas from both Hindu and Islamic thought. He was a great spiritual thinker and expressed his thoughts in extraordinary poetry. His family were Hindus, but He studied both Islamic and Hindu literature. As a child, He got great ability as a poet and philosopher.
He died on September 22, 1539. The Gurdwara Nankana Sahib, originally constructed in around 1600 CE was renovated in the years 1819 to 1820 during the Akali movement. The current of Gurdwara was renovated by Maharaja Ranjit Singh and he also constructed many other Gurdwaras. Thank you
