Nankana Sahib

Introduction and Location:
Nankana Sahib is a city in Punjab; a province of Pakistan. It is located around 50 miles southwest of the city of Lahore and 40 miles west of Faisalabad. It has a population approximately of 1.356 million and an area of 2960km2. Globally its location is 73°42′24″E, 31°27′0″N and 614ft elevated from mean sea level. Approximately 1% of the population is Urdu and rest is Punjabi speaking.

History:
Nankana Sahib is a holy place for Sikhs because the founder of Sikhism, Guru Nanak Dev born there. Originally it was known as Raipur, at the time of the birth of Guru Nanak its name was Rai Bhoi di Talwandi. It is named as Nankana Sahib after the birth of the first Guru of Sikhs, Guru Nanak. We will discuss the short history of Guru Nanak at the end of the document. Initially, it was a tehsil of district Sheikhupura. In In May 2005, the government of Punjab gave it the status of the district to develop this area.


Now it has three tehsils.
·       Nankana Sahib.
·       Shahkot
·       Sangla Hill.                        
Tehsil Nankana Sahib:
It is the most developed tehsil of this district. The sanctum of Guru Nanak is also situated there. Its area is 1627km2. And its population is 8 hundred thousand approximately. The famous educational institutes of Nankana sahib are Al-Muarif School and Colleges, Punjab Groups of Colleges, Guru Nanak postgraduate college, and virtual university, etc. Last year PTI Government has inaugurated Baba Guru Nanak University.

Tehsil Shahkot:
Shahkot is one of three tehsils of district Nankana Sahib. Until 2005 it was a part of district Sheikhupura. After the declaration of Nankana district, this territory shifted under the jurisdiction of district Nankana. The area of tehsil Shahkot is approximately 250km2. Its population was 2.5 hundred thousand in 2017.


Shahkot has several educational institutes including Divisional Public School (DPS), St. Mary ‘s convent High School, Government Colleges for Girls and Boys and Government Immamia College etc. Civil Hospital is the largest hospital of Shahkot.
Tehsil Sangla Hill:
The area of tehsil Sangla Hill is approximately 304 km2. Its population was approximately 2.27 hundred thousand in 2017. It is strange due to the presence of a lonely hill there. This hill is strange because the land almost within 100km2 does not contain any hills and is perfectly plain.


Fauji Foundation, Government High Schools for Boys, Al-Haram Education University and Aspire Group of Colleges are famous educational institutes of Sangla hill. The HUDA sugar mill has been operating there since 1980.
